Heya Reader... I've been wrestling with a question all year as my own business continues to change: What kind of organization am I actually trying to create? Not what I want to sell next or what makes the most money. Not even what will help the business survive, because survival isn't the same thing as preservation. I could keep my business alive by turning it into something I don't particularly want to run. I could keep doing work because people know me for it, and the business might survive. But, would I survive in a company like that? That's where Meat Loaf, the Kennedy Center, and Kongō Gumi come in. One gives us a surprisingly useful lesson about boundaries. One is giving us a real-time lesson about what happens when mission, money, legacy, and power collide. And one has spent more than 1,400 years demonstrating that sometimes staying true to what you're building requires changing what you've built.
